Help! (Engine Problems)

Quick version... bought a 98 motor, put PI heads, cams, intake on the motor. Somehow the crank reluctance wheel got put on backwards and busted the right timing chain. Which in turn busted a valve on cylinder 2. Took the head off and took it to a shop. They fixed the head. Slapped it back together... the car started up but had a back fire. Double checking things I found that I had 7 and 8 spark plug wires crossed. I swapped them and the engine won't turn over. It starts to crank and seems to get stuck??? A couple of cranks and the battery is dead...

HELP!!! I need to get back on the road already....

Well for anybody who is interested....

I'm looking at the high compression on cylinder 3 as my problem. I'm going to pull the spark plug from 3 and see if it will turn over like that. somebody from corral.net suggested that I have an exhaust valve stuck closed... hopefully leaving the plug out will eliminate the overload and let my starter turn the engine... albeit with 7 cylinders... wish me luck. I'll keep everybody updated...

that's what these kinds of sites are for man... to bounce ideas off of one another.... a rebuild is just an opportunity to learn more and buy more tools... Just slap the old engine in and viola!! I'm where i am right now because I let too many people put their hands on this engine... lesson learned. I really want to get this one going because the power it showed even with a dead cylinder was just amazing... sorry I could go on but you guys get the picture...

I need to rebuild my engine(97 GT) and the whole top seems fine. The valves, pistons, or I don't know what else is wrong. My car won't turn like 97 ponylover.
Should I just buy a new/used shortblock?

being as you already had problems with things in the crank, a new shortblock would actually be a great idea. there are so many options out there and different styles, you can add great strength to your car with aftermarket short blocks. even though you may think you haven't hurt your bottom end except for some bearings. they are too precise to mess with and you could have hurt the tolerances on anything, a hairline crack will bite you in the rear. buy another one
