Rear 8.8 making noise

Ok, I've searched the forums, but I haven't really found what I'm looking for. I have a 98 GT convertable and as long as I can remember the gears have made noise (stock gears w/ 125k). I think it may be getting worse and now at low speeds I can definitly hear something dragging by each tire and a little metallic sound that varys with speed. I lifted the car and put it in drive while the tires were up and could hear a lot more noise from the driver side so I pulled the axle and replaced the axle bearings. I found no metal inside the diff. That quieted it down but could still here what I think is gear noise and metallic dragging noise near both wheels. I did notice the driver wheel from behind while spinning looks like it is moving side to side. Could I have a bent axle or bent rim? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS, I have been told 8.8 gears seem to whine from the factory.

Silly question, but have you checked the brakes?

yeah, well I took off the caliper and still heard the noise and the slides did not seem to be "frozen".

I took the tire off and tighted up two lug nuts on the rotor, but it seems there may be a little wobble in the rotor. Could this be a bent axle?

It could be. It could also be a bad bearing in the differential itself somewhere, either a carrier bearing or a pinion bearing.

Thanks for the help, is there truth to the 8.8 commonly making a whinning noise?

If it is a pinion bearing, or a diff bearing, would I start finding metal in the rear end?

No, if the bearings are fine, and everything is adjusted properly, there should be no noise whatsoever.

Finding metal would depend on how worn stuff is. You wouldn't necessarily have to find shavings for something to be worn or out of adjustment.

its probably carrier bearings with that many miles on it. if the oil ever gets low and they get hot. it causes problems.

mine whines and it only has 35K on it.but the wobble could also be a warped rotor.
