PATS and Aftermarket Alarms and remote key pads

ok, so here goes.

My 1996 GT has an aftermarket viper alarm on her, but only one remote.

Now, i have a factory remote from my old 2003 GT just lying around, i came across it the other day. What I'm wondering, is if i can program the remote to deactivate the alarm AND work with PATS?

I *really* doubt it.

I'm guessing that FoMoCo and whatever company manufacturers the viper alarm are licensed for two different portions of the FM spectrum, and without a good amount of tinkering, those transmitters are only capable of transmitting on their respective company's frequencies.

I could be totally wrong, though.

I doubt it very much. Stop by a dealership and ask.

No you can not do that.... you could program it to unlock the car but not to disarm the alarm.... Though i had an after market alarm with remote start and it was only 35bucks for a new key fob.... you might want to go that route and just suck up 30 or 40 bucks 4 a new one....

Does '96 have pats? I thought pats is rfid, not fm spectrum. The remote does not deactivate pats, the chip in the key does.

good point Joe. Yes the 96 has pats. It was tested in some mustangs in 95 before being made public in 96.

thats easy because they are both RF. Almost any aftermarket alarm can accept different remotes. The RFID chip is much trickier.

it should be not problem. For sure you could use the alarm key fob to disarm and unlock the car. I always like the aftermarket ones better because you can wire up more stuff to them. (like the horn to mess with people)

I would DIY, but i've done a couple alarm systems in the past. Maybe take it to where you bought the alarm? Or download the instructions for your alarm and there should be a learn new remotes section.

the alarm came with the car, and appears to be as old as the car.... 13+ years... all i know is that it's a viper...

but theoretically i could bring it to a car audio place that installs alarms and they can program it for me?

Yes, I would take it to an authorized "Directed Electronics (Python, Viper)" dealer/install company (i.e. car audio place etc.)
