Changing Headers Difficult? TIPS PLEASE!
Looking to swap out my stock shorties with some BBK Shorties Have a Mac o/r H-pipe and MAC Catback right now. My brother says the buy plus the amount of hassle to put them in isn't even worth the hassle. Is this true? Also my car has 120k on it I would imagine they are on there pretty well haha. Thanks Guys! -Antman

just take some PB blaster on the header bolts and the bolts at the collecter. let sit overnight then get at it the next day. I dont know what your mechanical skills are so I will rate it as "not difficult" for the mechanically inclined just time consuming getting stuff out of the way.
, im sure someone will have something more.

Thanks me and my bro are pretty well inclined he just thinks it will be a pain in the arse because of the angle on them and the amount of miles on them and what is this PB blaster? Also when you say getting things out of the way what might that include?

Just go to your autoparts store and ask for PB Blaster. Its like WD-40 but alot thicker and penetrates alot better IMO. You will need to remove things like your intake duct, various wires, and other things in the way so that you can access the bolts and remove the headers.

If your going to all of the trouble to swap out your headers, do long tubes. This is one of the most labor intensive jobs you will do on your car MPITA. My shorties were a pain with the motor out, the lower bolts are a bitch to get out.You can do it, it's just not easy, at all.

The ass pain is horrifying. It's like being raped in prison for a solid week.

I know I'm going to be doing them myself. I just would like to know how much shiz I am looking forward to haha. All I know is when I took off my mid-pipe for the first time last year that took alot of heat and muscle lol. I was just wondering if it wouldn't be a bad idea to take them off and swap them while I have the engine out which I plan on having out in a year or two for some more complicated upgrades (P.I Swap and so on). Wait or tough out the pain of replacing them now?

lol
nah. I just think it's something everyone should experience in their lifetime... it'll make ANYTHING else seem simple and easy. Installing headers on a mustang = Hell Climing Mount Everest in comparison to installing headers on a mustang = easy : )

![]() I just did my LT's about a month ago. On a mechanical scale, I'd rate it 4 in difficulty. On the PITA scale, 20+. ![]() It's a straight forward job, drop mid-pipe, starter. Unbolt steering shaft, swing out of the way (LT). Remove air inlet tube. Unbolt manifolds. For LT's I jacked up on the motor to fit the headers in. I only needed about an inch with each side. The PITA part is there is absolutely NO ROOM !!! I still have scars on the backs of my hands from squeezing them between the motor and strut towers. The stock A arms and K member block any "line of sight", and most of the manifold bolts you can only get wrenches on. So if you can get your hands on some ratchet wrenches, do it.

I got every tool imaginable for the job just sucks I can't see where to put the wrenches. I recently had to replace my throwout bearing because I blew it to pieces haha and that was adventure also. We will see though.

I had a header leak forever before i got around to getting started (wait, i still have it, but i'm getting close!!). I put on an entire MM suspension so i could get access to the bolts on the passenger side. So header leak = $4K in suspension parts (at least thats what i told the GF!!) I was going to put new gaskets in when the K was out, but the MM k is not really in the way at all and i figured i'd do it after i get done with hacking up the rest of the exhaust to make the TQ arm brace fit. Yeah, its a 10/10 on the PITA scale, especially if you don't remove the K.
