Am I missing something?

If your check engine light comes on, you need to plug in a reader to see the code, right? Is there a reason that they haven't installed a tiny LCD (calculator style) on the dash that just says the code instead of just reading "Check Engine" ?

what do you guyz think?

lol, 80% of people wouldn't know what the hell a code is. they actually need the car to say "check your engine idiot". But im with you, it should be an option that smart people can get, oh and than have the code index in the user manual!

well the hayne's guide has the index...but I dont want to pay to get this shizzle checked out.

of course my dads 05 silverado has a text bar below the gauges. it acts as the odo but ive seen it say "coolant low" and stuff like that.

My check engine light came on too! I pulled over, opened the hood, and my engine was still there. Closed the hood, got back in and told my car to stop messing with me. Then the light went out.

It's about $100 for an OBD II scan tool from Autozone. Or you could get a tuner, tune your car and you can use the tuner as a scan tool to read codes.

Autozone will scan it there for free in their parking lot, it will throw the codes and you write them down. Look up what codes mean what, and then you will have an idea of where to go from there.

+1 autozone will also look up the code and print out its meaning and possible problems.

btw go to ebay you can get scantools on there for dirt cheap i got mine for 2 bucks plus shiping it works great and it hooks into my laptop where i can then read what most of my sensors are doing.

there is a trick you can use your odometer to see codes and stuff. i think it's on mustangworld.com check it out. you can do a digital tach and all that stuff too.

+1, it could even be in a place under the hood or the dash... But if they made it easy like that, then the dealerships would not be able to charge $150 to look at it...
