Spring Install
Is installing springs a do it yourself job or should I take it to a shop and have someone do it. I'm taking the the horrible lowering springs that I bought the car with off and i'm goining to put stock GT springs on them for the time being. I have the tools but I've never done it. Any advice??? Thanks.

me and my dad did it on my car its not an hour project but it can be done. i was orginally going to try and use a spring compressor form like autozone but ended up just takeing everything apart. i had quote from kauffmen tire and they wanted i think 200-250 to do springs thats not bad as i look back on it. i would of prob paid someone to do it just b/c its like a good all day project with another person. its not impossible but getting the stock springs back on are prob gonna be a pain. just my .02
good luck |

you can do it yourself, no need to spend money on the labor. it'll take a few hours, but not all day.

No sweat, just be careful on taking the stock springs out, the are longer and pop sometimes so get something to clamp them on a compressed positon. I installed my springs in 1.5 hours. No problem. Just get a 4lb sledge so you can get the control arm bolt off the A arm. You'll have to wack it hard for it to release or use a tuning fork to shake it free.
There are a bunch of articles for spring replacement on the web.

if you don't have a lift and are just doing it on jackstands, make sure you have the car jacked high enough so the control arm will swing low enough to let you pull the spring out. since it was my first time doing it when i did it on my car, it took me a day of fighting before i realized that i should just jack the car up higher. also, you don't really need a spring compressor, just put a floor jack under the control arm and let it down slowly. but if you want the warm fuzzy of having a spring compressor on the spring (not a bad idea) you can rent one from advanced auto or autozone. i just found that the compressor was more of a hinderance than help.

I just swapped out my stock 4x4 springs for a set of eibach sportlines. If you get good springs they will come with everything you need and tell you exactly what tools you need. Make sure and use the center pull style spring compresser because you can't get the side pull compressers 180 degrees from each other. Take the time and disconnect your caliper, strut, and front sway bar so your a-frame can swing down as far as possible. Your lowering springs will probably fall out of the rear end, you'll have to compress the front ones. You'll just have to wrestle the stock springs back home,.....better you than me.

Didn't need to use a spring compressor or take off the a-arm. Just took the swaybar links off, then the tie rod, lower strut bolts and abs bracket, the just pushed the a arm down with my foot and popped the spring out with a prybar.

In that link on how to install the springs, it said something about german torqueing or something. I was just wondering what that is and how it is accomplished?
