when is it time to start worring about what fuel needs to be used

this is just me being curious but i want to knnow when do you as a engine builder... wether it be professional or do it yourselfer, when and how you go about determining that this engine that youve built needs to run on something more then standard 93 octane pump gas?

im not to that point yet lol but i like to know this kinda stuff

thanks for your time

Compression ratio, timing, and IAT's.

Intake air temperature. Usually with forced induction you have hotter intake temps due to the blower or turbo (not nitrous though) that heats up the air entering the motor. So that translates to a hotter temp in the cylinder which could lead to pre-ignition. Higher octane gas can resist the increase in heat.

oh i gotcha, im in the process of doin research for building a more serious motor for the car and i didnt know if messin with boreing, or porting and polishing, or even cams would call for a need for any of that. i dont plan on messin with either of the 3 variables that ya mentioned but it is very useful information to know. thanks

compression and boost are the 2 big ones. Timing can be adjusted. Hot IATs will demand more octane. You can read this on things that can cause detonation and remember the cure for detonation can be higher octane.
