engine break in is apparently not a clear black and white subject
their are so many opions out there on how to break in a new engine.... in fact it would seem in this case that there are more opions than assholes at this point
![]() just so i can add to my confusing quandry i would like to get some more opinions on the subject, mabey this way i can find a middle ground of saftey or something. what i have heard so far is for starters dont use synthetic which i couldnt agree with more. when you start the motor you have to get the rings to seat, which the shop that built the short block said to bring the car up to 50 mph and let it back down against the motor. my dad says he used to do a few 660 ft runs but doesnt go full track. and i understand that getting the rings to seat is probally the most important part of this whole process but i dont want to screw it up if ya know what i mean

first of all newer engines really dont need to be broken in. but if you want to be sure(which i would too) i do what the haynes maunual says
floor it from 30 to 50 (so keep it in second gear), let it take you back to 30 (no brakes or clutching) do that 10-12 times. then drive gently for 500 miles. change oil. drive normal(no pampering and no abusing) for about 1000 miles. at 2000 miles after startup chang oil again. consider it broken in. havent done that with a stang yet, but did it with my jeep wrangler, 4000 miles of offroad abuse later and it still runs perfect (lotsa compression) thats my 2 little pennies

Yeah, it all depends on the engine. My new toyota they said to drive it spirited. Don't cruise over 75 mph, Don't get it past 7k rpm but don't baby it. Use normal oil till 5k miles. Then change the oil and the car is good.
In the hydroplane racing world. The engine is is a 511 with 16:1 compression and revs to 8500 rpm. We run them at 8k rpms for 15 minutes straight with easily 12k rpm spikes when the prop comes out of the water. The brake in period for them is only take it to 6k rpm and do that for 5 laps. After that, go wild. Its different for every engine type and every engine builder. Some builders are better than others and some parts are better than others, so if your builder doesn't tell you a specific routine that seems appropriate, Id follow the steps that Trick Outlined.

I noticed at around 1,100 miles of my new mustang, that it accelerated quicker. I took it easy up until 800miles. But my first month I drove from california to portland, oregon. hah

when I broke in my 07 Cobalt SS in I babied the shit out of it until 2000 miles, slow accels and such, if you dont break an engine in you'll be fine in the short term, but once you start hittin 100,000+ is when it matters

so thats kind of what the haynes manual says, except for it wants you to do an easy 500 miles after. but ill agree with that article, it seems legit to me
