look up the laws for your state. every state has different laws, and some cities also have their own ordinances.
Don't buy any o/r midpipes though, they're all illegal

If u dont live in cali or have to pass emissions get an off road x and 40s. these set ups always sound sick.

If you're in the Cali bay area, everything downstream from the last cat is totally open, provided that you still have a muffler, and you're less than 95dB as measured by however they do that (some SAE defined test).

My suggestion is to go to a decent, local muffler shop, and have them do one up for you. My local guy did a single-exhaust full custom catback for my Bronco for under $200 and my dumped magnaflows for about the same. If I wanted full exhaust all the way to the bumper, it probably still would've been under $250, $300 if I wanted chrome tips.

That's MUCH better than the $500+ plus shipping for a mail-order kit, and you're supporting a local guy (who you may need for other things later on, like installing SFCs).

Nope.

Cali is VERY lenient once you're past the cats. You can do just about anything you want, provided you have a muffler, stay under 95db and if you go side exhaust, it just can't exit at some range from the ground (I think it's like 16" to 10', but don't quote me on that).

My understanding is that Massachusetts is much worse, and that factory MUFFLERS must be retained.

Other than emissions, California doesn't do any sort of annual/biannual inspections, either.

i dont understand why everyone wants to spend 500 buck to get a 1/4 inch bigger piping exhaust on their stock engines. it aint gonns do that much for you. especially if you dont enjoy changing yo ur exhaust system every two years to pass emissions so you run the factory 2.25 catted h pipe. that 500 dollars exhaust system is doing you no good at all.

look for the muffler you like the sound of and like rev said, have the local muffler shop do the install.

i for instance, researched and liked the sound of the dynomax race bullets. summit sells them for 40 a pop and the local muffler shop installed for 45 a piece. so 130 dollars later i'm roaring down the road with a big 'ol shit eating grin!!!

he asked what WASN'T illegal. any o/r pipe is illegal because there are no cats.

Call me a treehugging hippie, but get a catted midpipe. The 'power' you 'lose' isn't noticeable, and you're not polluting the shit out of everything everywhere you go. I don't really care to smell your exhaust as I'm driving behind you.

If you dont have to pass emissions get an exhuast in which tress die as you drive down the road, thats what I was going for to the best of my ability without failing emissions. Most of flowmaster's mufflers sound godly.

go with MAC. They sound Great and are loud, and are cheap on the wallet... perfect for a 17 year old.
