So i was checking my filter today to see if it was clean or what the status was. and come to find out, its a K&N air filter. My question is, if i get a cold air intake system will that filter work or will i have to buy a new one? another thing, what exactly is part of the cold air intake? isnt it mainly the filter you have? or does it have something to do with the pipes too? thanks guys

its different piping as well as the newer filter. I dont know if the filter you have will work with a KN intake kit but I doubt that you can buy the kit w/o the filter. the whole "cold air" sales pitch, comes from the fact that the piping isnt made out of a metal like some other intakes that would retain heat and thus warm up the air as it passes through the piping. but lets get serious the air is moving so fast through that area that I doubt that there is any big difference in temp. thats really the only diff b/w the "cold air" intake and just an intake system. i have a KN FIPK 2 and its nice, mainly for dressup but I did feel a minimal gain. but if you have 180 bucks to spend I would buy a used tuner on Ebay if I were you.

+1 i dont think you can buy the "cold air intake" with out the filter, so it doesnt really matter.

If your gonna go buy a CAI, you should just buy a JLT. K&N is good, but you will find that JLT is HIGHLY recommended on this site. They make a quality part usually with noticable gains.

ok so basically figured out the filter wont work if i get a cai. So the only diff between a stock intake and a cold air intake is what the piping is made of? no way? also why on most cars you can here a "breathing" sound for lack of better word haha

i was also wondering, How big of a differance is there in the stock filter and the K&N? i mean is it even worth mentioning when giving the details of your car?

Well personally i will never put a K&N filter on my car. They let to much crap through. And well your probably wont feel a difference using a K&N vs. stock. Now if this was a cold air intake, it would change my opinion completely, but its not so, no I dont think that its worth mentioning when talking about ur car.

when you only change the filter, you may free up a little air going through the pipes, but not enough to notice a difference. probably only like 1-2 hp.

when you put a CAI on, it frees up a lot more air and will probably give you 7-10 hp. you will notice that.

yes, the engine will "breathe" easier. the stock rubber intake tubes on the mustang are ridged and restrict a lot of air even after it goes through the filter. A CAI provides a smooth tube for easy flow of air. Also, the cold air kit for mustangs puts the filter into the fender well, so it isn't only sucking the hot air in the engine bay but nice cool air coming up the fender.

SO, because you are getting better air flow, you will hear a "sucking" sound when you step on the gas quickly... its simply because you have better quicker access to more air. its kindof a cool sound too. just get one man. theres no "cheap way" to do it.

sweet, thanks for that info! Im just curious, Has anyone ever made their own CAI? i know you can like buy just the pipes on ebay really cheap, so that would solve the pipe issue, then just modify the filter to fit inside the fender. wouldnt it be the same thing?

truthfully if you want to know the K&N is bad b/c it allows oil into your motor from the oil that is required to oil the filter. I would just stick with a common Filter

Cheap CAI units will break at the welds. When you have to throw it away, you'll wish you had spent more money. Buy a good unit with a good track record. Like it was said before... follow the recommendations from people on this site that have experience. Good luck.
