Question

Cold Air Intake help!!

I took my 2002 GT weekend driver and made it my daily driver. I'm not looking for great gas mileage because i know i wont get it. but looking for better gas mileage. I wanted recommendations on what intake i should go with. Stock or cold air? and if cold air what Brand should i get without having to tune the car? Thanks

Question

Only thing I've done to the car is 3.73 in the rear and took the Mufflers off. I have 109,000 miles on it. I'm getting about 17 city and 20 highway. I just replaced the O2 sensors and spark plugs (they were stock).

That's not bad mileage at all.. I'm getting 17.5 - 18 all stock except for a tuner running 91 tune. The tuner bumped me up like 1 - 2 mpg. I'm not sure a CAI will do much for mileage, not for the $200 cost you'll be spending which will take you a WHILE to recoup the benefits. I would take the $200 and get a tuner where you will likely see better mileage plus you'll need the tuner in the future. Did you get a new speedo gear for your 3.73 or is your speedo off now?

The bad part is i need a new intake whether its cold air or stock back on. The intake i have is falling apart and need a new filter and its really looking pretty bad. Plus its a cheap intake from ebay.
I would not mind giving someone money for the stock intake if they had it. or pay someone for a cold air.

either way you're not going to gain much in ways of fuel economy by just a cai, and no matter what intake you get you wont need a tune for them. but like i said before i'll sell you mine for 100 shipped if you're looking to spruce up the engine bay.

+1

I dont have an $80 one but theres absolutely nothing wrong with it..it would work just fine for your car

When I had my 97GT i was able to get roughly around 280-290 miles per TANK with 4.10's if I drove it like a granny..and when I got u/p for it, I was able to squeeze 320-330 miles...not that much but it helped a little

Hey SJ!! did we finally find something to agree on?

sometimes you get what you pay for. I dont want to buy something cheap i will have to replace in a few years and also have heard the aluminum piping on the cheap ones arnt as effective as lets say the piping on JLTs.

sometimes being the key word.... with cold air intakes its pretty much a straight forward design. and what do you mean by arent as effective? like a difference of <1hp?

i wouldnt really worry about it just get a cheapy 80 dollar one and call it a day. and no the aluminum ones dont "heatsoak" so no worries cause it doesnt hold heat long enough for that theory to even be valid

lol @ takiller yeah but i still hate you...... jk beers for all!

Thumbs down

Im not expert at modding my car and i appreciate any help. But yea i was told the aluminum cheap ones dont shield the heat as well. Im not really looking for HP gain just need a new intake from the falling apart one that i do have.

K&N drop in filter... The only reason I got my CAI is because the stock intake wouldnt fit my t/b.

I have a stock filter housing, K & N drop in, and the rubber.."piping" to the throttle body, the complete stock filter. Do you still need one ? I should be able to sell it, dont see why not.

i donno what intake you had that fell apart but that sucks sorry to hear that

and the aluminum ones dont hold any heat really, just for like a split second, its not like it affects your IAT more than a degree or two.

just go with the 80 dollar stack racing one and call it a day, if you dont like chrome spray it black.

/end thread seriously

cant believe were having this large of a discussion regarding a cai if only there was a rice smiley

My friend who went supercharged had the bbk one.
i put it on my car for a week before i got the cheap AM brand cai (80$ ftmfw)

there was honestly no difference between the two.
hell, the cheap one looked, and felt better built anyway!
