hey all,

So my first day with my new car, I start it up and let it warm up for a few minutes(as it's close to freezing) and while it's warming up (the door is open) I can smell what I think is gas or something similar. it's not over powering but definitely there as my passenger mentioned it as well.

Is the car running too rich? It has welded flomasters, could that be the cause? Something else I should look at? Maybe it was just a freak occurrence and its' nothing to worry about?

Your probably smelling some kind of exhaust leak. What else has been done to the exhaust and the car besides the flowmasters? what year and make? I started smelling an exhaust leak from my car had to drop the H-Pipe and replace the metal gasket on the passengers side that connects to the headers.

Is the car running cats or not?

the car has cats, to my knowledge only the mufflers have been changed I believe they're welded in, I could check..and I didn't notice the smell the first time I drove it only yesterday, and it went away after a few minutes.

it's a 98 cobra 50k.

Did you have it sit for a long period of time before cracking it up? If i let mine sit for a good 20 hours before cracking i get a smell on first crack up for a few minutes. just the car getting warmed up and warming the cats.

probably an exhaust leak, my collectors don't seal up too well but I only smell exhaust if it sits for a while. Probably nothing serious

every car will run a little rich on a cold startup. stand behind a ford taurus on a cold start and itll smell like gas. just the computer trying to get the engine warmed up. wait til it gets up to operating temp - itll be fine.

If you get rid of your cats it will seem and smell like your car is running rich when it is not. That smell can and will get into your cabin, the smell will even come in through your cabin filter so there is no avoiding this "rich" smell of exhaust with no cats. Now since you have cats I would check for an exhaust leak which is possible, just jack her up, turn her on, and check the pipes......that sounded sexual.
