head unit wiring question

Well, the question isn't exactly about the headunit. I bought a special iPod adaptor for the head unit(damn company makes you buy their special one like apple or some s***). Anyways, this seperate adapter that plugs into the headunit requires its own 12v power supply. My question is where should I tap into to get that power? Would splicing into the power supply for the actual head unit be safe? Any help is appreciated, my good amigos.

EDIT: It's an Eclipse CD3100 with an iPC-106 adapter if anyone else has this

If course a direct freed would be better, but then again the unit would constantly remain on unless you wired an independent switch for it as well. If you haven't spliced ur head units supply wire already with something else I would say it's fine. Saying it needs it's own 12v power supply is alot different then actually drawing that much at a given time.

If you want to be really safe add the draw that both your iPod unit and your hu need to run and add them together sincethey wud b running in parallel then look into whether or not the current wire will support that much draw. Primary goal is to not to overload the wire. Personally I'm assuming it's a 16 gauge wire that powers your hu. So I'm thinking you should be fine, by it is worth checking into.

Looking over the instructions for the ipod adaptor (which doesn't have a ON/OFF switch or anything) says it want s a permanent 12v supply. The head unit has 2 power inputs, one for key on input(when key is on ACC, red wire) and one that has power constantly(B+, yellow wire). I'm thinking this adapter will want the yellow wire.

Well after some more googling I found that, since there is no memory or anything on the adapter, you can hook it up to the red, which I did. that way if I leave the ipod plugged in it wont drain the battery. and the wire says 300V on it, does that mean volts? I looked for an amp rating or gauge, closest I could find was it said 18AWG or 18AW(something) idk what that means. 2 hours of straight use and no funny smells so hopefully Im not overloading the wire.

Nice! I'm actually in an electric circuits class right now. Problem is, all they teach you is how to find current and voltage and stuff, nothing about different kinds of wires and real world stuff like that.
