Depends on the maker. A 315 isn't always the same (which is obviously dumb because they should bemade that way). As an example, a BFG 295 is phyically wider than a 305 Nitto. If you run a 315 from a company that runs narrow, you'll be ok. If you go to a company that runs wider, it's not going to fit the rim safely. I run 295/35/18 BFG tires on the rear of both my Mustangs (18x10 rims).

you also have to take into account the wheels offset, i have some custom wheels being made and we had a test fit of a 20x10.5 with a 61offset that will carry the 315 drag radial and wont stick out. its not the tire width that will make it stick out its the rim and offset, If you have the cash just get a set of 3 piece or a set of monoblocks that are made to your specifics and you can make it work but the 315 is really at the limit.
