pros and cons of buying a used handheld tuner???

Well, its a pretty simple question. What are the pros and cons of doing this? I'm very new to the world of Mustangs. I started with the obvious first mod, the CAI. I'm slowly moving into other things because this is my daily driver. But any who, could someone help me out here?

hope to god its unlocked (meaning previous owner did not return the vehicle to stock before selling it to you) if not its about 150 to erase it so you can make new files on top of what you paid for the tuner

Hmmm...that'll suck. I've been wondering if I should buy new or used. I guess new would ge the way to go. Just curious, if I were to buy a used one, would a company like Bama still do the tunes for life? Or will buying used negate that?
