Turbo guys. how much trouble would this be???

We have a garret turbo laying around that is good from what I am told. Not sure if its off a 6.0 or 7.3 diesel. But how much trouble would it be to put it on my 97 4.6? Or would it even be worth the effort.
What parts would I need and how would I make this work on my car?

im not an expert by anymeans on a stang turbo setup, so let me make that clear from the get go. what i know is from my own research on the web. the turbo itself is pretty straight forward, the trick is in the hot piping (this includes, the down pipe, headers, and various connectors) this is where the install can get pricey look at around $1500-1700 for the pipes, unless you can fab your own. next you will have to upgrade your fuel pump, injectors, etc just as you would a supercharger, along with the piping for the intercooler which usually a pre-fab kit can be purchased for a reasonable price (under $1k). next you will have to look into tuning your computer. this is a very rough explanation. any other comments from our fellow board members are welcome for sure, and correct me if im wrong with anything. proturbosystems.net is a good place to start looking at what you need as well as ebay for the intercooler and piping. let me know how it goes!

well not sure if im gonna do it. just getting some opinions before hand. I was planning on going SC next year but since this FREE turbo is just laying around ya know.....

If this were a 5.0 car I would do it. but a 4.6 i know jack about turbo set up.
or even where to put it. On a 5.0 I would just turn the headers upside down and mount the turbo there where the PS would be.

I have heard of rear mount turbo systems and such, the turbo on a 4.6 would mount either in front right behind the bumper or, where a centi supercharger would, really your choice. just keep in mind that the turbo is gonna have alot of heat around it, so i dont know how crazy i would be about mounting it behind a plastic bumper its a shame turbo parts for the 4.6 are so darned pricey, but oh well, gotta pay to play i guess.

I seen one online tonight mounted right infront of the water pump. seems a little hot there.

I guess what I really want to know is, if you guys had a turbo, but nothing else would you use it or buy a SC. The SC is what I really had plans on.

yup, a S/C will be allot easier to set up, plus heat isn't that huge of factor with it like a turbo. But on the other hand, a mustang with a blowoff valve would just sound wicked. I think in the long run the S/C would probably be cheaper to put together and plus you don't have as many pipes to worry about leaking (those turbo setup's like the expensive pipe's due to the extreme heat involved in it.

turbo with a built motor - good idea, turbo on a stock motor - bad idea
