Need help, rebuilt tranny popping outta 2nd gear and...

Trans has less then 400 miles on it! I've been driving it easy cause I'm breaking in my new clutch, so its not like I caused some damage from having driven it hard.

When coasting and slowing down in 2nd gear, it'll pop out once in a while, and only do it then. When I'm at a stop, sometimes it wont allow me to go into 1st gear, so what I've to do is released the clutch about a 1/4 travel, then it'll allow the shifter to move forward and fully engage 1st gear. Also, when almost at a complete stop.....you know, that point in time where you're almost at a complete stop then the red light turns green.....you can either shift into 2nd and take off slow, or go into 1st and take off normally. Well the times I've shifted into 1st gear, I can feel the tranny gears spinning, then stop and "grab" as I put the shifter into 1st! It scares me because it reminds me of the way it was before the rebuild, only difference being that it would screech and grind when putting it into 1st.

I called the tranny shop yesterday and the guy I talked to says he thinks its my shifter causing the problems! I've got an MGW orange handle shifter, why would it give me problems like that? He says to put my stock shifter back on and see if it fixes the problem.
What do you guys think? Thanksin advance

I dont think the shifter has anything to do with it or you would not hear people talk about how much they like their MGW shifter.

Sounds like syncrho or slider issue. Either it wasn't replaced correctly or not at all.

I have all the broken and old stuff they replaced. They told me they replaced the 1st to 2nd synchros, along with the 1 to 2 fork and rail, and bearings.

I really REALLY don't wanna have to drop the tranny again...

well then maybe there was something installed incorrectly.
or possibly there were used parts that were put back in. possibly from another trans

Or tell them that you want a new trans or rebuild that one again. A shorter throw does not have anythong to do with the internals of the gear box.

Unless your stops are set in too far.? IDK I don't have an aftermarket shifter so I wouldn't know how the stops work.

I'll have to take a look at the stops and go from there. Just don't see why it would start doing this now when it never did it before?!

If it isn't your shifter stops, the trans will need to be pulled back out.

Also make sure that your clutch is fully engaging. Although if that were the case it would do it in all gears.

Sounds like a poor rebuild to me.

It would totally suck if it was the rebuild! I took it to Anaheim Gear after a buddy of mine told me about them. He had them rebuild his t56 for his 600hp termi and hasn't had any issues with it! The two main guys (I'm guessing one or both are the owners), seemed like down to earth stand up guys, I'm hoping it is as simple as the shifter stops! If not, then I'll have to drop that sucker again and take it into the shop! Like I said, the guys sounded/seemed like top notch guys and had really great customer service, I really hope they stay that way!

It goes back and fourth about the shifter stops but what I have always read is that the shifter stops are built into the trans. So what I did with my shifter even tho it is not mgw (hurst) I loosened the stops further than they needed to be and then put it in gear with a tad of weight on the shifter and then tighten them up, when you let go of the shifter there should be a couple thousandths between the shifter arm and the stop so that if you really slam gears it won't overload the built in stop. I have never had and of the synchro issues that everyone seems to have with the 3650 and it has about a 100k on it so far! Knock on wood!!!

Can't be a synchro issue, would be grinding while shifting into 2nd gear if that was the case.

My 3rd gear synchro has been shot for about 3 months now.....itll still hold and not pop out.

Could be a shift fork not properly installed or 2nd gear has a few teeth missing.
