My 96 Cobra Runs like a Powerstroke at WOT High RPM
I have a powerstroke diesel in my Cobra now and I don't know why.
For a while the car was consuming oil, not a lot, but enough to bug me. It's stopped. It was smoking white over 5,000 rpm, that's almost completely gone now, if not gone. My problem now is it runs RICH. I'm talking diesel rich. I went wide open throttle on it going to work today and behind me was a pure black cloud she left. It really stinks too. I've done some mods, and the car has always run rich but here's what was done in the past: Long tube headers 4.10 gears Off-road H pipe Spin Tech Exhaust Just added a month ago: MSD Coil Packs MSD Conductor Wires Ford Stock Platinum Spark Plugs gapped to .056 all around. For some reason the plugs the previous owner had in were gapped to like .044. The above were just recently. I changed the spark plugs to the stock Ford Platinum spark plugs with the stock .056 gap. Also installed MSD coil packs and spark plug wires. The car doesn't smoke black at all until I go WOT and let it go to the very high RPM range. My question is what are some things that could cause this to happen and what can I do to get the car running "normal" again. How would I fix the A/F ratio in high RPM? I feel like a twin-turbo F350 diesel or something, which is pretty cool but luckily the only thing I need haul is my car down the quarter mile. |

I once new a guy with a 95 cobra, used msd and swore up and down that msd and platinum plus doesn't work. He said he did it and his car ran like $h!t. When i was upgrading my distributor in my z28, msd actually told me to avoid platinum plugs.
Has anyone else heard anything like this? |

never heard of the msd thing.
But i have said it once and will say it again. You have long tubes, NO CATS and catback system. every car i have owned or friends have owned that didnt use cats smoke. and run very rich.

Yeah, I posted this though because the previous smoking was white and it's magically stopped smoking white and burning oil, only to be black. (A new color, it's like I have some sort of acid trip of a car.)
If you want, you can delete this thread though, seems logical. I'm just really paranoid sometimes, I have a lot to learn. It may just be my paranoia and a rehash of my former problem with a new cool color. I've never heard of the MSD thing. However, I guess I could easily throw in copper plugs too. However, I logically can't see that making a difference. I mean in the end the idea is still a spark being created. I don't know how an MSD product is going to make a platinum spark plug spark different than let's say stock ford. |

I think there's a negative opinion for every single product on the market and why its bad. There are probably a million people out there running MSD and platinum no problem. I should have went copper, but was stupid and listened to the Autozone guy when he said "this is what came stock in your car." No big deal though. I like changing my spark plugs sooner than every zillion miles.

if you dont have cats, your exhuast is goin to smell like your running rich and it's going to have a little more white smoke in it than the car with cats..it doesn't mean ur burning oil and shouldnt have anything to do with the ignition.
just a tip tho...platinum plugs suck in my book...
