Personally I would go to a dump find either an 03-04 cobra engine and rebuild it, or rebuild the 96 with a blower and convert it to a 4 valve. If any money is left dump it into exhuast and supsension.

I have no clue how much the cobra engine would be but your could easily switch the 96 engine to a 4 valve and rebuild it for roughly 3 grand probably.... That is, if you can either do it yourself or have someone do it for cheap

that friend better have a lot of time and patients on his hands. 2v to 4v is possible, but its very complicated and tricky. There's a thread actually all about it the ChrisJ ressurected. If I find it or the thread he hyperlinked it too i'll link this page as well.

Not if he does a PI swap! I vote for the 96. I will have 300 HP for less than 4500 bucks and that includes custom cams, PI heads ported and polished, PI intake, Longtube headers, and everything else to get the swap done with a dyno tune for less than 4500, and you will be quicker than any 99-04 GT that is close to stock, and what you have left, can etier go to a nitrous kit or IMO the best option is a nice suspension
What kind of gas mileage You gonna be getting?
