Why are you taking off the shifter to change tranny fluid? To change the fluid get underneath your car and look at your tranny there are two plugs the bottom one drains it and the top is where you put it in. If you do take the shifter off for some reason tho you will need to seal it with silicon, make sure you removed the old silicon seal with a razor blade or leaks could occur.

just be sure the car is level when doing it. pull the top plug so it can drain and you know when it is full. pull the old gasket off and seal it up with silicone. i fill mine like that when i change my transmissions.

+1. Filling through the shifter is convenient if you already have the shifter removed, otherside might as well just do it from under the car, although no reason you can't do it whichever way you want.
And yes, if you do remove the shifter you will need to seal it again with some sort of gasket sealant. I would recommend looking into CobraBob's stang shifter gaskets. The only reason I say that is they are cheap and if you use gasket sealer the shifter will be a ***** to remove next time, whereas with the gasket it will pop right off and you can resuse as many times as you want (assuming it doesn't get damaged) |

Are you sure you're not thinking of the older 5 speed trannys with the shifter on a plate mounted to the top of the transmission? These new remote mounted shifters are different. Like somebody said, there are 2 plugs, one to drain, one to fill.
Wait a minute, what year car are you talking about?
