4.6 SOHC timing...

ok, i have a dumb question but i have to ask before i tear the front end off...

I know that when you time the 4.6 your crank gear marking should be at 6 oclock and #1 piston should be at TDC...

So here is my dumb question: Is it possible to have the crank gears at 6 oclock and #1 not be at TDC???

not if you are looking at it correctly. it is all in a fixed position. the cams will change every other revolution, but not the crank.

so then as long as my crank gears are at 6 oclock then #1 should be at TDC. I ask because after putting everything back together my car will not startup and it's really presenting as a timing issue. I have fuel, spark and air. The only thing I don't remember doing is checking for TDC on #1. The motor will spin and it tries to keep going but then just kind of dies. best I can describe it.

It could be 180* out of time or you have it a tooth off on the gear

How would i get it 180* off?? That did cross my mind. The motor was originally 180 off.

I was told at one point to disconnect the cam position sensor and that would put the car in a default limp mode and would at least tell me if something was screwy with the cams. I tried it with no success.

if for some reason you had the crank of the cams exactly opposite of what they were suppose to be, they ill be 180 off.

some quick history that might help... I guess my problem must be somewhere else maybe electrical.

I had put in a pi swapped 98 motor. the guy who assembled it put the crank trigger wheel on backwards so it busted a timing chain and valves.
the car did run with the bad valves after replacing the timing chain...it just ran like poop. I pulled the damaged head and took it to the shop. After I reassembled everything I started having this problem. the motor turns over but will not stay running. it's like it chokes.

I decided to put the old motor back in just to eliminate anything mechanical with the motor.

i know i'm getting fuel and spark. timing has to be set I followed the procedure to the 't'. Could the car not be delivering enough air? when it tries to start i have the throttle body pretty wide open. at this point the intake, computer, sensors and starter are the only things that are the same.
