Loud Rattling noise! HELP!

Noticed on my way home today there was a loud rattling nise coming from under the car and stopped and checked it out . Thought it was a bad cat on the exhaust and when I drove it to go get it checked out at the exhaust shop, it went away. The exhasut guy said my cats are solid and exhaust didnt rattle at all. So my question what could it be? it comes and goes! Could it be tranny?? I have a 5-speed and the rattling can be heard when not in gear. When I rev it it makes the noise as well/./ ANy thoughts??

How certain are u that this is it? When the car is in neutral..it makes this noise no matter if it is in gear or out of gear. The noise hasnt come back since it went away earlier today. Could it be the cat heat shield?

Hard to say. I would post a sound clip for us to be more certain.
