welcome to the forums.

run a higher octane gas first..

does it have a check engine light?

if so - pull the codes and let us know what the numbers are.
if not- just do regular service to it for it's mileage.

Higher octane will raise the detonation point. If you are having detonation.

yeah dude, for sure try a higher octane. those cobras need to run on premium. in case you didn't know, pinging (detonation) is about the worst thing that can happen to your motor. DON"T get on the gas until you fix the problem.

Follow those directions to a T. Detonation is where you piston is actually just rattling around in the chamber. NOT GOOD!

Thanks for the advice. I'm already running premium, as the car has always had. No CEL, no codes, pinging is usually only on hot days. Even then, not all the time, only when under load @ lower revs (like squeezing the gas in 3rd or 4th between 2-3 grand). Yeah so I could avoid this by downshifting every time I pass someone on the street, but that doesn't really solve the problem (and the cops take notice) So I'm guessing some new plugs and fuel system cleaner in the tank for starters-- again, any suggestions on plugs/fuel additives??
