1 quart every 900 miles?

i have a 2000 mustang gt 4.6 with about 57000 miles on it, i noticed it is using about 3 qts of oil between oil changes now, and every now and then it smokes on start up, i changed the pcv valve, air filter, and took it to the dealer, who told me it was normal for a ford to use 1 qt of oil every 900 miles??? is he telling the truth or is he just yanking my chain since the engine is under warranty?
plz help this is driving me crazy

It was normal for cars in the 1960s, not today. I have driven many cars, both Ford and Chevy, past the 100,000 mark and rarely added oil between oil changes.

I have a 1996 Cobra, and they are apparently known for running through some oil.

I put on an air/oil seperator on the PCV and after one day was amazed at how much oil it collected.

Also, if you are starting the car up on startup you might need new valve seals, actually, probably do.

I'd say I run through at least a quart every oil change, if not more depending on how hard I drive it. Then again, this is the DOHC.

The factory manual never defines "excessive oil consumption", although it states that the service technician needs to:

"Define excessive oil consumption, such as the number of miles driven per liter (quart) of oil used. Also determine customer's driving habits, such as sustained high speed operation, towing, extended idle and other considerations."

3 qts in 3000 (2700) miles, on an engine with 57k on it, sure meets my defintion of excessive consumption--BTW, I have 58k on my '03 GT and it doesn't burn a drop in 2500 miles (10W-30 synthetic, Florida=HOT)...

+1 I had a Ford Tech tell me one time (when I was fairly new to my car, and mustangs) that said I needed new brake pads, and a tranny flush. I had 20,000 miles on my car. I was a little sceptical, so I talked to buddy of mine who was an auto mechanic and he said they were bull-shitting me. He said there would be know way I would need new pads at 20,000 mile unless I beat the hell outta my brakes. He also mentioned that you don't "flush" manuals, it's a simple drain and fill. I took his advice and didn't bother with taking my car back to Ford. Ever since then, when I take my car to get oil changes, warr work, etc. they have never once mentioned anything about my brakes or tranny. They say they all check out fine. One time I even asked a Tach to check my brakes and tranny, and he said they both looked fine. Just anotherr tech tryin' to squeez money out of people... or in your case lying so they won't have to fix your car while it's under warr...
