99-04 Saleen's and Roush's
I've always wondered why the 1999-2004 saleen's and roush's went with the 2v engine instead of the 4v like the Mach's and Cobra's....Anyone know?

Well, I was always under the impression that you bought the car and then took it too Saleen our Roush and had them upgrade it too the package of choice. There are 4V Cobra Saleens out there (and I'm sure Roush cars too), I have seen 'dem.

I've always seen them for sale at actual Ford Dealerships....I've never seen a 4v Saleen or Roush. You probably saw a Cobra or Mach with a body kit....

My understanding, at least for Saleen, is that they buy V6 cars, not GTs (they may even get them sans engine/transmission). The V8s are a very reworked version of the Ford motor, not a stock Ford 4.6 with some bolt-ons. And Ford doesn't give them a thing, they have to buy their cars just like we do (though I bet they get a hell of a deal on 'em).
I've also never seen a Saleen Cobra, nor reference to any "real" Saleen Mustang with a 4v. I know for a fact there are some Roush Cobras out there (they're pretty rare though... I think when they did make them, there was less that 10/year).

I can answer this one ....
SALEEN and ROUSH, like most of the other signature tuners (yea SALEEN is still grouped that way) purchased the 2Vs and converted them in various stages/levels or performance because it's overall more cost effective to sell the GT powered 2Vs. This applies to the 96-98 lines as well.
The price point and performance for an 'enhanced' 2V put it above the Cobras of the era. So in classifications, it works well for SALEEN and ROUSH to sell their 'top' car over the FORD 'top' Mustang - Cobra. SALEEN and ROUSH did modify a few Cobras and as mentioned they were very rare. ![]() and only 1 ROUSH Mach 1 (white) SALEEN point ... ReverendDexter, those V6s were destined to become S351s. Check the VIN on the S351s ..... almost all came back V6. There were a few built off the GT, can't remember but it was a unique situation. BOTTOMLINE: The S281s were based off of the GT platform, still today. |

There have been both Saleen Cobras and Roush Cobras...
They are just more expensive then your average person could afford... |

Since we're breaking down info .... unfortunately ROUSH's records aren't up to date like we'd like. There were at least 10 known documented 96-98 ROUSH Cobras were produced.
ROUSH Cobra breakdown for 2003-2004MY 03 ROUSH Cobras 6 coupes 5 verts 1 D3 – Torch Red 1 Coupe UA – Black 1 Coupe G2 – Redfire 1 Vert 2 Coupes SN – Sonic Blue 1 Coupe 04 ROUSH Cobras 5 coupes 2 verts 3 D3 – Torch Red 1 Vert UA – Black 1 Coupe YN – Silver Metallic 1 Vert 1 Coupe Z1 – Oxford White 1 Vert and at least 1 yellow vert that wasn't on the 'released' list. ROUSH made very few SVT based mustangs during the SN95 generation. |

Most saleen's and Roushs are just a modified gt. And that does mean that they do not have upgraded short blocks. They are mostly just a gt with a body kit, some new shocks and springs and a supercharger. They are kind of like the slightly better cobra, stock. But in the long run, the saleen's unless they have a new Reciprocating assembly are no better than a GT with a body kit.

So were these Saleen Cobras supercharged? Different gears? Any motor work whatsoever? Or are they just the suspension and body-kit?

It depends on what package you get. Saleen and Roush both offer S/C upgrades.

So what you're saying is that these were all custom orders? That there was no specific "Saleen Cobra" package? I know that Roush has their stage 1, 2, and 3 packages, so that would make sense on the Roush side, but my understanding of how Saleen does their products is that an S281 is something specific compared to an S281 S/C, or an S351.
Like I said, I'm mostly curious. I want to know how badly I'd get beat if I lined my mildly modded '98 Cobra against one of these bad boys

I may be wrong on this... but I also believe Roush took part in 6 Cobra R's! But thats only what I've read elsewhere!
