How much HP can you estimate that this car produces

I am planning to buy a used mustang from a private seller and if all claims are true, I just may take it up. It is a 1988 Mustang and with the 4.2 liter V8

Under his modification list he put:

"The car has port & polished 351 cleveland heads, 3 angle valves, 750 holley double pump carb, forged pistons, 12 1/2 . 1 comp. Headers, 2 1/2 inch exahust, 40 series flowmasters, 373 posi rear, 5 speed with a hurst short shifter, msd ignition, msd distributer, mild cam, battery relocation kit."

Now I want to know how much Horsepower you think it can produce since he never had it Dyno-ed. I wanted to say that it could make around 400 at the wheels

Your guess is probably better than mine, but if you want to guess please specify RWHP or BHP, thanks.

welcome to the forums.
4.2? isn't that an audi motor?
the normal mustang motors for the year are 5.0 and 351
(with many other choices obviously)
I am not too familiar with the push rod motors so I'll let the 5.0 guys take a stab at a HP guess

something doesn't sound right. Are you sure it said 4.2l. That is way too small for a 351, unless those heads fit on a smaller engine. I don't really know, I don't have an 88'. But still, assuming those were all correct id say in the 350 to 400 range. Its hard to say, but with no power adder and it only being 4.2l. Its hard to say it makes more than 350 without it revving to the moon. Is it a trailer queen?

I'm sorry it is actually the 5.0, I got some bad research results.

Please continue.

I'm so sorry for all the confusion but it is the 351, as you can see I am new to the car scene.

Also, just forget about the "4.2 liter V8" part in the first post, he told me it is the 351 and that is all I know about it.

Isn't a 351 a 5.8?

Doesn't really matter if its Cleveland or Windsor that I know of. Its should be around 400, it could be more. You need to find out what the car red lines at. If it is a 8000RPM engine, its good. But otherwise, its hard to say.

yeah the 351 cleveland has more HP than the windsor...i have the Cleveland in my Mach 1, and it depends whether it came out after 1971, after that year with the new emission laws big motors like that dropped in HP...but they still kick ass!
