98 with valve noise?

Questions on the "sounds" of a 98 4.6l
I looked at a 98 GT today. The engine sounded odd. Seemed to make a lot of noise in the upper part of the engine. Almost like valve or valve train noise, not like one valve but the whole thing. I've had quite a few non push rod engines but never an 8cly one and never one that sounded like that. It was loud enough that it was only only thing you could hear while hanging around near the engine compartment and even with the hood shut and about 5 feet away, you could still hear it. I test drove but did not really get on it but the sound did not seem to get louder. The car has 125K miles and the exhaust looked good with no smoke, water, or odd smells. I believe the car was completely stock. This may be normal if you are used to it but my only comparison I have right now is to my two 5.0 Mustangs.

Thanks!
