Chronic Bad Thrust Bearing

I think its the thrust bearing, I always forget. Anyway, when I have the car in gear but the clutch in, it clatters. I have had it fixed a couple of times, but it keeps coming back. Do I have a bent shift fork? or bad Trany? I don't know what would cause it to keep going bad.

what kind of clutch first off? how many miles?

i dont think a shift fork could cause it to chatter, thats internal, and the shatter it external, bent shfit fork would only cause shifting issues.

sounds to me like your clutch is not dis-engauging all the way. could be clutch, or could be clutch adjustment.

what has been "fixed:?

i would probably start off with a firewall adjuster, and a quadrant, that would most likely fix your issue.

I have had the Bearing replaced a couple of times. I have some issues with shifting but they are normal issues, that the transmission guy should be fixed by switching to synthetic. I will do that at the same time as my next oil change. But the clattering sound should be affected by it. How hard is it to get the adjustment stuff for my clutch? and can I do it without getting the adjustment crap?

You are talking about the throw-out bearing I believe. The thrust bearing is part of the crankshaft bearing set.

Throw out bearing, that is it. I work on Hydro's and that is what we use for our shaft, but I was blanking on what the "Throw out bearing" was called.

really need to know what clutch though, it could very well be a warped disc.

The clutch is almost brand new, less than 10K miles. But it is a stock replacement clutch. My engine is not modded other than my CAI and Full Exhaust, so I should NOT be pushing the limits of the piece. They replaced the Fly wheel and the pressure plate and everything when they did the replacement.

well then assuming the clutch isnt defective, the next thing down the line would be adjustment of the clutch.

i would go ahead and get the triple hook quadrant, and the adjuster, and that should take care of your problem.

you can try the adjustment method for your stock clutch, but it doesnt always work, and doesnt stay like that.

sit in the driver seat with the engine off.
using you right leg put it under the clutch peddle, and pull upp pretty hard
you should feel it nudge up a little
hold it for a couple seconds
then put it to the floor as hard and fast as you can
hold it to the floor for a good 5-10 seconds
have you foot in a position where you can slide ot off the side of the peddle easily
slide your foot off, and let it dump, needs to come up as fast as it can.

thats how you adjust the stocker, might have to do it a few times to get the feel you want, and it will only stay there so long until you have to stop and do it again.

it does work though.

really should get the UPR peices so you dotn have to continueously do it, and your clutch will be adjusted right.

Will this save me from having to replace the stupid throw out bearing again? And when I install the quadrant and everything, how do I know it is disengaging enough and then, how do I know it is engaging fully?

if you do a few searches there area few write ups of adjsuting the clutch. i jsut adjust it until it feels right to me.

is it jsut chattering, or is it chirping? a TOB going woudl cause a chirping sound.

The noise has maybe a little whine to it, but mostly a mechanical clatter kind of sound. When I had the throw out bearing fixed, it took care of it originally, but comes back.

these cars do go through throwout bearings pretty easily, the T56 has a fix for it, but im unaware of a fix for a T45, or T5. you may try going to ford, and getting a new TOB retainer sleeve. they wear down, and cause the TOB not to ride strait, and wears faster. theres a bunch of aftermarket ones for the T56, but none for a T45 liek your car would have that im aware of.

its the clutch cable. I suggest what others have said. And get a quadrant, factory cable and firewall adjuster.

Have worked on many of what youre describing. The throw out bearing will continue to go bad with factory adjuster and cable.

Just my 2 cents, i dont really care for aftermarket clutch cables and stopped using them a while back when i could buy a firewall adjuster by itself. Then i started talking to guy who raced these cars like myself and found out they were also staying away from aftermarket adjustable cables. My recommendation is to check out Maximum Motorsports :: The Leader In Mustang Performance Suspension and get their kit. Non-adjustable cable, with a firewall adjuster and quadrant.

Good luck which ever route you choose,.
