try unhooking the battery for 5 minutes then try again. if that doesn't work, try using a different key if you have a spare!

this same thing happened to a friend of mine on his 96 GT i think he either pulled his alarm fuse, or cut the wires and it started right up and kept running

Actually depending upon the year, the car might crank.
Here is a comparison of the various PATS systems: Passive Anti Theft Diag TSB 99-26-6 Try a different key. Could also be the transponder in the steering column. Do you have remote start system or a NON factory alarm? To clear an unrecognized key you have to put a good key in for 30 seconds to Run position (IOW don't crank it). |

The PATS information is stored in the cluster AND in the ECM. It's a fairly sophisticated, although buggy, system. |

could be transponder , which is easy to swap. and or the eec fuse, its a large yellow 20 amp fuse under the hood see if its blown
