drag radials on long trips
i used the search function but didnt find anything about how dr's do on long road trips. my regular tires on the back are pretty much done after today lol. im thinking about going ahead and getting some basic drag radials. i have to move to a place 12 hours away from here in may. if i still have dr's at that time, would it be fine for me to run on them for a long trip like that?
im guessing it would be alright. thanx in advance for any input. |

Maybe, maybe not
From where to where? Are you moving up the coast or inland? Is it early May or late May? Assuming your in Southern California and moving up the coast over the grapevine through Bakersfield, etc. you might be OK. If going inland, are you going the northern or southern route through the mountains. The Sierra Nevada's can still be pretty nasty in May. It's not only the snow at higher altitudes but the spring rains and snow melts that can cause problems. If your going the northern route, I couldn't even recommend summer high performance tires. Sometimes all season tires are not enough. Inland through the Tehachapi's might be OK. They are pretty dry mountain range. After that it depends of whether you go through Las Vegas or Flagstaff. The route to Flagstaff can get kind of testy. It really depends on where you're going. Just because you can drive drag radials on the street doesn't mean that they are a good street tire.

if they're nitto's they will be just fine, they will go 15-20K miles, and are great on long trips.
a DR like a BFG, MT, or anything of that degree will still be ok, but considering they only last like 3-5K miles. a 12 hour trip at 60MPH is 720 miles, so thats definently going to put a damper on the life of them.
