I think it's not wise to do so.
Something about the fluid overheating because it's not getting pumped around properly. Also, I'm sure that putting it back into gear at speed isn't real nice on the internals. But mostly the overheating fluid bit.

Manualy downshifting the newer electronic overdrive tranny's spells disaster. Mine went with only 60k on the ticker. I manualy shifted mine often and one day it grenaded.

I would say it's bad, and it MIGHT get you 3-5 more miles per tank depending on how often you do it...

Honestly You have a 6er and its not worth the damage. Suck it up and buy some gas, your not guzzling it as bad as the 8 bangers.

Unless the hill is around 1 mile long(seriously, my dad used to coast his VW GTI down one all the time, turned the car off once too just for laughs) why bother? Shifting into drive if you're still moving sounds pretty bad too.

One thing to think about is that the car will go into coasting fuel shutoff during decel with moderate load. This uses 0 gas (less than idle). If you put it in neutral it will go to idle mode.

Right. Coasting fuel shutoff turns the fueling off. If you have a wideband it will peg at 20. Take it out of gear and the gas turns back on and should run at 14.7.
