Cam Swap Compete: 5.4 GT

Cams are installed and the car's running pretty good. It definitely needs tuned now, but it still runs smooth. It seems to have a little bit of an idle problem, and it has a little trouble starting.

It wasn't as bad as we were expecting. We had to use the engine hoist to lift the motor on one side so it was tilted in the engine bay. It was very tight, but were able to remove and reinstall the valve covers without actually pulling the engine. Took us about an hour to get one bolt out, though. Once we figured out how to get to it, it wasn't that bad. If it was a 4.6L, I think we could have done everything in one afternoon.

I drove it for about 150 miles and then changed the oil last night. Drove it to work this morning and its running awesome. One of the problems with the 5.4 SOHC stock is that it really dropped off after about 4500 rpm, well with the new cams it pulled hard up to about 5200 but i stopped. It felt like it would keep going . We installed VT Stage 1 Cams.

I order a UPR cold air intake and a C&L plenum and 75mm TB this morning and hope to have it installed next week. I will be getting it dyno tuned mid next month.

Here's some videos.

That's GREAT...

I'm about to be in the process of a 5.4 swap my self. I'm a few parts short of a complete swap and i already have bolt-ons, exhuast, ported heads and cams...I don't want to get rid of the long tubes so im planning on modifying them to fit.

Good luck.. I bet with some bolt-ons that thing would be one nasty beast.. You've caught my interest with this one...keep me updated...thanks..

CAI TB and Plenum Installed!

I was able to get the UPR CAI, Accufab 75mm TB and the C&L Plenum installed yesterday. Took it for a spin and it is really running good. I am installing the Dynomax Cat Back tonight and hope to have some videos up by tomorrow. Enjoy the eye candy

Do you guys have before and after time slips or dyno #s? I wanted to know the improvement the 5.4 offers over the 4.6, besides the extra torque. The swap is something Im interested in doing when my 4.6 kicks the bucket.

Well i don't have a dyno slip before the swap. I am getting it dynotuned next weekend so i will have one after the swap

Had it at the track once before the swap and ran a 15.2 something.... completely horriable. I spun the tires off the line

Wow, that is down right dissapointing. You need a new cam and intake manifold. I mean, considering the dissplacement differance, all you did was going torque over a GT with New Exhaust. I know you just got it tuned, but that is a truck motor. Your intake is designed for mid not High RPM's. I don't mean to bash your car or anything. That is bad ass that you did the swap, and that torque will translate to around 400hp with a new intake. The stock designs are just not ment for a car. You got a bad ass engine man, but it needs some tweeks.

That's some amazing torques! That curve is crazy!
I agree though... I'd expect the power numbers to be higher...

Real nice torque curve.

I think our stock modular 2V heads really hold us back.

I just had a Comp 262AH set of cams installed and dyno tuned and I only managed 265rwhp at 4900 rpm. I've got all of the other bolt ons except headers and pullies.

Ported heads will probably give you a nice boost up top.

swapping a 4.6 2v for a 5.4 2v is not worh the hassle in my opinion. I have done 2 of them for friends and they still get there buts kicked by the 4.6's

this is an old thread

the stock design is plentiful till around 6200rpm or so. the 5.4 is same bore and longer stroke. there is not an aftermarket manifold that has really prove itself yet. there are a couple that do ok, but most will loose torque and power below 4k rpm's, and barely out do the stocker above that.

the head efficientcy is a weak point on the 2v motors, but can be worked on to help. the heads arent the greatest design, and chokes the power of these motors
