On the heels of the automaker's announcement that it finally posted a profit this quarter, Ford revealed today that the 9,000,000th Mustang has rolled off the factory floor. Approaching its 45th year of existence, it is the company's longest-running nameplate.



Introduced on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's fair, the "1964 1/2" Mustang set a sales record for any single model in the history of the automobile, moving 419,000 examples in its first 12 months and topping 1 million in just two years. The car contributed to the start of the original muscle car era, and now the current generation has helped spark the new battle between rear-wheel drive, V-8 coupes that's raging today.

The historic Mustang to hit the 9,000,000 mark was a GT Convertible, and is currently heading west to be delivered to a dealership in Iowa. These days as gas prices are soaring, Americans may have become more interested in cars with good fuel-economy than power, but here's guessing this particular V-8 model won't need to be offered at a discount. Besides, over the past four and a half decades the Mustang has seen plenty of ups and downs in the automotive industry yet, as always, the iconic coupe has managed to survive.
