I purchased a 2002 Mustang GT from Carmax about a year ago. It's been a decent car with hardly any problems, none mechanical, in the year that I've had it. When buying my Z4, I decided to sell it. Carmax gave me the best offer of any of the dealerships that I had been to, buy about 3,000 dollars. I thought this was somewhat odd, and I had a friend at a local dealership go over the car. He used a paint meter on the car, and apparently the entire car had been repainted at some point in time, except for ONE front quarter-panel of the car. Now obviously this would lead me to believe that something had happened to the car that had made it need to be painted, but when I purchased this vehicle from Carmax, they gave me a clean CarFax report, and said nothing was wrong with it. They told me that upon transporting the vehicle from another dealership to my local one, the front bumper scraped the ground coming off of the truck, so they did a paint "touch-up" on the bumper. No worries right? So now I'm stuck with this car, and I was going to use the quote CarMax gave me as a bargaining price with other dealers. But now no dealers will give me anything near what the car is worth because of the paint-work that was done to the car, that did not show up in the suspicious CarFax report. What should I do? People have had this problem before that I've read about, who have taken the cars back years later and demanded all of their money back, or they would take the dealer to court. I can't get what I want for the car, but if CarMax didn't know the car had been repainted, and I told them, I'm wondering if they could possibly say we didn't know, and now we won't give you the amount we first offered you for the car. Any suggestions?
