a cold air intake places the filter in a more remote location allowing it to suck colder air... away from the heat of the engine. a ram air intake is basically just a piece of pipe and a filter coming out of your intake. they are pretty useless IMO. even though rai's are cheaper, it's def. worth it to get the cai.

I didn't catch this thread right away so you may have it all figured out by now but just in case you don't ...
CAI = Cold Air Induction - air is drawn into the engine from an area isolated from the rest of the engine compartment. Those filters you see with the shield around them are CAI systems. The shield reduces the amount of hot air getting to the filter so that cooler air can be drawn in from outside via the space behind the fender. They work with about the same efficiency if the car is moving or standing still. RAI = Ram Air Induction - outside air is forced into the engine but the vehicle must be moving for this to happen. I'm not sure at which speeds they generally become effective. Ram air systems will usually utilize a functional hood scoop which seals to the intake system when the hood is closed OR they can use ducting to draw air from the front of the car. I've never had one but anything that will force more cool air into your engine is going to add to your power output. Hope this helps.
