stall converter
See I want to get an auto as my next car. I wanted to get a Mach 1 and me and my girlfriend are going to share so she wants an auto, which doesnt bother me because there is alot of traffic here, but i have read a stall or torque converter which i am guessing is the same thing makes it just as fast as a manual. What I want to know is what does it do and are there differents kinds and what is the best. Also does it eat tq and hp?

the right stall will do what you need it to do. i a lot of traffic you will need to get a cooler because a stall will heat up the fluid quiet a bit. there are different kinds of stall and you will need to do your homework on witch one is right for you. it frees up power and will get the out of the hole you need. if launching is what you are wanting then maybe 4.10 gears will do what you want, that is a night & day difference by itself

a stall converter is mounted underneath the engine replacing the passenger valve cover and offsetting the weight of the steering wheel ultimately increasing the efficiency of front suspension. also decreases the amount of distance the driveshaft has to travel yet still yeilding the same amount of power.. this tends to create a problem though among many with the front left brake caliper placement... however a simple trick is to simply remove the valve cap out of the rear, passengerside tire and this will offset the couterbalance at high speeds ultiamtely making the car much more powerfull and driver friendly. i wouldnt recommend going in reverse though for obvious reasons. btw you'll also have to replace the front left headlight with a halogen bulb and get your pistons flycut and you'll be set.

is there a difference between a stall converter and a torque converter? I was thinking that stall was just the rpm range of the Torque converter. let me know because i am so confused. and to tell you the truth, i bought one and i cant tell you the difference, if there is one!

torque/stall converter is the same. if you are driving and there no differnece in the way it stalls up, then you probably have what is considered a flash stall. come to a complete stop and without stalling the car up just come out of the brake and just floor it. remember that a bigger diameter converter will create what seems to be less of a stall, a smaller diameter converter will increase rpm range, heat, and get that stall feeling where the car has to be at a certain rpm before movment. also keep in mind that horsepower will also effect how a car will stall up. takes power to get a high stall to stall up correctly.

A higher stall doesn't "engage" later before the car moves. It doesn't work that way at all. When you step on the gas the car moves just like any other car. The slippage is what gives the higher stall speed. Under a heavy load the converter will slip alot more than at normal acceleration. I have a 6000 rpm converter in my car and you would never know the stall was that high if you didn't use the transbrake. On the street it drives no different than a 3000 rpm converter.

okay i am gonna sound dumb AGAIN, so here it goes. So just say i had a 3000 rpm converter. this means that it wouldnt rev until 3000 rpms and then take off? i think you said above that the car moves as soon as you hit the gas. I think i should def. sell this thing since i dont even understand them!
