Cool

how much will a thicker head gasket reduce compression??

ok, i just swaped out my 6lb pulley for an 11lb pulley on my 98 gt.
i have a set of pi heads and intake, the heads have comp cams 270's w/ bee hive springs. the heads are not ported but have been completly done over and re-surfaced. now i'm pushing 11lbs of boost on a stock motor and i would like to install my heads w/out blowing up my motor(i'm not quite ready for a built bottom end yet). if i use a thicker head gasket would that drop compression enough to safely install my heads w/the 11lbs of boost or is that just plain stupid? should i not even bother w/the heads and just run 11lbs, or might i get more out of the pi heads and intake (i can drop from 11 lbs back to 6)? i just waunt to get the most out of my stock motor. i'm thinking i should go w/pi heads and intake w/6lbs of boost(might give me another 100 hp). with 6lbs i added 50hp to the wheels, i'm not sure what i get from the 11lbs maybe 75-90 hp? so i may get a little more from the 6lbs and the pi swap.

Running a thinker head gasket will eliminate two of the best qualities of the P.I head. Running 10.4:1 compression is not the end of the world with a blower, many have done it without troubles, tune it right and be done. Cylinder head quench, installing a thicker gasket is going to take away the added quench area that the combustion chamber design gives. Honestly taking away these qualities you would almost be better leaving the NPI heads on for the time being or a least until you can afford higher quality internals.

Run the 6# pulley with the pi heads or run 11# with npi heads/ p.i intake and cams. .....

The link will take you to a compression ratio calculator. Fill in the blanks and hit enter and you can determine what each mls gasket will do for you.
