Hi! just joinded today, had a new 4.6 put in my wifes 1999 cobra, now the computer is throwing the P0340 camshaft position sensor cirsuit malfunction. does this sensor need to be set in time with the new motor or do i need to just put a new sensor? also is there a special alignment tool i need to set this in time? if so anyone have the part numbers? Thanks!

i guess nobody knows or else they'd have answered your question.. i dont know either but in an attempt to help i'd just change the sensor out and see if it still throws the code. has the car been idling rough or anything out of the ordinary? if not, just change the sensor its behind the power steering reservoir.

I had the same problem in my 2002 gt. I replace the camshaft position sensor twice and the code still. To do the long story short, all the problem was the alternator. I do not know the theory behind that but i fixed the problem.

Yellow, its strange you got that problem in youre 2002. Yes the alternator can set a p0340. Sounds strange, but it can happen. First check to see if its plugged in and has a good contact. Check voltage to it, to make sure something didnt get clipped when the engine went in.

thanks! i replaced the sensor, so we will see what happens when my wife drives to work today. i drove it around for about 10 minutes nothing came up. so we will see. i did try to check the old sensor with a volt metere and waving a piece of metal past it i got no voltage spikes. so hopefully that what it was. the alternator does seem to be charging aswell.

may want to voltage check the harness plugging into the sensor itself, you may need to take off the power steering resovoir to get to it. make sure its a good connection. and make sure nothing is on the magnet if all checks out i'd try the dealership. does the car idle any different or run sloppy since it threw the code.. its throwing that code for some reason... hmm
