Mod motor OR pushrod? Input please
I have been milling this over for awhile. I am in a position to choose what motor I am going with in my mustang. I was wondering if some of you could give me some pros and cons of both, and ultimately give me a vote on which would be the best way to go. My choice is going with a 5.4 mod motor, or going with a 351W base that will be bore stroked somewhere around 430. If it helps, this motor will be going in an SN95 and will be turbocharged. All input is appreciated. Thanks.

I would rather have pushrod motor as it seems to have less limitations, but then again with all the recent aftermarket advancements for the mod motors valvetrain I guess you could go either way.

This is an easy question. I love mod motors, but the 5.4 is a better boat anchor than powerplant.

Yeah, they're great for trucks. Everyone hears "5.4" and just assumes that since it's bigger, it's better. Noone ever talks about the small bore and hideous stroke that pile of garbage has.

I have always believed there is no replacement for displacement but like stated just because it is bigger does not necessarily mean better. You have to put together the correct combos, if well educated you should be able to obtain more power out of a bigger displacement engine as to a smaller displacement engine theoretically.

if your going to tear down, build and bore a motor the 5.4 4v is better actually....

How much money do you have to spend? There are advantages to both setups. A mod engine is going to cost more, hands down. I would suggest going with the 351W based engine, especially since you have a 5.0 now, correct? The 351 will bolt right up to your tranny, although the t5 might not last long with it.
They sell aftermarket 351 blocks that are capable of being stroked to 460ci. They also have the same blocks in aluminum, weighing almost 1/2 of the cast iron blocks. |

correct, going with the 351W base. It's going to be bored somewhere around 427, maybe more...not sure. Going with a Man o War iron block. Going to need a little extra weight with the power it will be putting down.
Ditching the t-5, going with a Viper or T-56. |

ive been in your situation when i had my old 89 I rebuilt it to a 347 had her for about a year then ended up selling her for my 4 valve that I have now. I love my cobra but I will admit that i miss the way a well built pushrod feels. I think soon I will be getting another fox but this time instead of a gt im gonna get a notch. So I say PUSHROD FTW but you are on the right track with the MOW block gotta make sure that the block can hang. What is your target HP?

It should push 1050hp to the wheels on pump
gas, 1700 on race fuel with boost dialed up....not that I will ever run it that high |

i wouldn't turbocharge a 427W stroker unless you're looking to run 7's

it's safe to say that even a well built naturally aspirated 427 stroker will outrun almost anything you will ever go up against
darrell had a 1990 notch with i think a 425 stroker.. naturally aspirated.. ran 9.3 in the quarter

True, but I have a few vettes, 300Z's and an Evo running around with 800 or so HP to wheels. Got to make sure they get put in thier place.
