road trip advice needed, please help

Honey mooning in Niagria Falls in august. We are coming from Chicago, IL on sunday and want to drive straight to a hotel over looking the falls, either side is not an issue. Then wednesday check out and take our time getting back to Chicago. Looking to get home friday or saturday.

We really enjoy state parks and taking hikes and just the generally active outdoor stuff. Also I've been told its great wine country.

Any must stops or things to see/ do both at the falls or on the way back?

Are you staying on the American or Canadian side? American side is more scenic, Canadian side is more tourist-y. Lots of parks area and trails on the American side. There's always the maid of the mist boat tour as well. Couple casino's on the Canadian, just one on the American. Lot's of things to do on the Canadian, but I speak more from the nightlife-raising hell kind of thing.

Also what route are you taking? If you're staying stateside I suspect you're taking the 90, that will take you through wine country in SE PA and the SW NY. You'll likely pass lots of winerys, I'm not an expert, but I'm sure Google can help.

And it doesn't hurt to hit up Buffalo on the way back. Get yourself some beef on weck and chicken wings downtown. Can't go wrong with Duff's, the Anchor Bar, or the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery, all just minutes off the 190. Oh, and lots of boring historical and art things in Buffalo, but I doubt that's of interest to you.

You kinda hit the nail on the head, with the historical stuff. I was hoping for some local advise as google is just advertisments and i dont have a lot of time to just roam around. Is there anything good on the canidian side of the drive? So far it sounds like us should be cool. Are their signs for the winerys and historical nerdyness? Sorry for all the random thoughts. But your info is great!!! Thanks and keep the suggestions comming.

Canadian side is mostly tourist trap stuff. Lots of small stores/kiosks, chain restaurants, hotels, and a couple bars/clubs I used to frequent. "The Wild Mushroom" bar is usually a pretty good bet.

I'm not terribly familiar with the historical stuff up in the falls. On the US side it isn't tough finding all the trails, walkways, etc. in and around the actual falls. A neighboring suburb, Lockport has a number of historical things around the original Erie canal, including, you guessed it, locks.

Down in Buffalo there's more historical stuff than you can shake a stick at. Two of the big points are several Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, and the Albright-Knox art gallery. Add to that a big science museum, zoo, naval park, waterfront, etc... (And of course the famous Chippewa strip. Tons of bars open till 4am, not your scene I imagine though.)
And of course everyone seems to love the shopping at the Galleria Mall, especially the Canadians, which is right off the 90.

I believe there's signs for the wineries.

I'm sure there's lots more to be found around there, but the things you're looking for weren't exactly what I was fixated on at the young age of 22.
