That part of the zoo is a really bad spot for lighting. They have tungsten lights, with hazed skylights. Custom white balance is the only way to shoot in there.

3rd one down from top is best one in the bunch. Cause he looked up and his eyes became visible instead of being caught in shadows.

Thanks Erin for your insights... I had the camera in the Evaluative metering mode...and your right, the light in there is really funky. Here's a few more I liked...

And I see what u mean Erin about getting the right shot with the subject looking at you and capturing the eyes.

no problem bro...i tried adding color as well but i have learned from Erin and the way he shoots to try to stay as true to the original as possible. If you saw the birds in real life, they're not that vibrant and deep in color. My original was more true to life.

The eye's make the shot, when they are tack sharp you have a hard time not being pulled into the photograph as a viewer.

@serbian, sadly that wasnt a cell.

it was my camera but i was driving so i couldn't adjust the settings to get a good shot

Next piece of advice, because the light is poor, you have to use a fast aperature which means your limited to a shallow depth of field (subject is sharp and blurs further from camera). Bumping your ISO to 200 or 400 will allow you to expand the AP and get the entire Gorilla sharp as well.
