what kind of tripods do you guys use? i didn't want to spend a whole lot on one because i figured they all worked the same. man was i wrong. i bought one from walmart for like 20 bucks and i could not for the life of me aim it exactly how i wanted to. it would always go too far. i got tired of it and threw it on the ground and now its broken. so im in the market for a new one.

I don't think mine has a brand. It belongs to my boyfriend and he got it for free somewhere, but its kind of heavy even though its aluminum so its hard to haul around

Quantaray QSX 9500 from Wolf/Ritz camera shop. I like it because its sturdy, and I can crank it up like 7.5 ft in the air if needed.

Lots of people try to skimp here, and you just can't. Many things affect a tripod that one doesn't think about when getting ready to purchase. The environment (wind ) make cheap ones wiggle, witch adds to camera shake. The whole reason you were buying to begin with was to not have any.

Try ebay and the used equipment sections of B&H and Calumet.

I currently have a carbon fiber Manfrotto base for my travelling and walking tripod. Over kill for most, but it's light and I don't even know it's on me when I carry it.

My daily use tripod is large in size. I swap my manfrotto head between the two, I didn't want to throw another 200 out to duplicate. I can weight this one in windy conditions so I can still take long shutter shots in poor conditions. Happens more than you think, storms and inclement weather are when skies are the coolest.

All of this I list is expensive, so don't freak out, but here's links to the bases and head assembly I use. You can find cheaper equipment used, or by companies that haven't built a name already. Just be sure to get similar construction. As you noticed it's more important than you think.

Manfrotto head:
Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action Ball Head - BG1360 - 222

Daily pod base:
Manfrotto 055XV View Aluminum Tripod, Green - BG12166 - 055XV

Walk around Carbon base:
Manfrotto 190CX3 Carbon Fiber 3-Section Tripod - BG1107 - 190CX3

Just a random shot I took around the corner from my house as I was getting in from work last winter.
Also shot through a dirty windshield in a moving car.
