Panning and remaining sharp is a skill developed with practice.. Laying your focal point on the vehicle and staying constant easier said than done because we tend to not move laterally very well with our faces embedded in a camera.

For my camera there is a crutch to help the photographer a tad. Not sure about the nikon products capability. For canon, shoot manual at f5.6 and 125th to 1/200th of a second on the shutter with AI servo engaged. Might have to adjust for the light a bit if it's overcast or extremely harsh noon sun.

You should really look into getting a chin spoiler, they look great on the 99/01 bumpers
