HDR Photography

I've known about this for a few years... tried it a couple times with crappy results and didn't bother with it again, until a few weeks ago. Now I can't stop taking pictures all over the place. I'm working on a website right now for my photography (amongst other things). I do realize there are a couple spots on some of the photos I took on Sunday. I was a little damp outside and I had a couple spots of water on the lens in a few of the pictures. They were all taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XTI. All of the landscape photos were resized to 960p wide. The normal width is 3906p.

Here are a few I've taken over the last few weeks (and feel free to post your own HDR work)

Little overcooked for my taste, but beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. Good work. I would love to see the unedited versions of the mountains.

I'm not actually sold on HDR imagery yet, to be quite honest. I never give my 2 cents on it, because I don't want to insult the photographer. But I know Fluffy loves me dearly and tenderly, and won't take my comments as demeaning.

But yeah I dunno. It's not that I dislike it. I do think it looks cool.... particularly with the right subject and setting... but then part of me wants to see the picture in standard format.

Maybe I'm just old and crotchety.

Here's what you need and how they're done:

Camera (with the ability to set stops) +/-2 minimum and ability to shoot in RAW format
Tripod
Remote
Photomatix

You set the stops in the menu of your camera to -2, 0, and +2

Point and aim from the tripod. Make sure it's steady. Use your remote to take the pictures so there isn't any movement of the camera.

Your camera takes three pictures at the desired stops. One if underexposed, one is a normal exposure, and the other is overexposed.

You then put these three raw files into Photomatix (or whichever software you choose). Now here's the thing... people associate this kind of thing with photoshop or other unnatural photo editing. The three shots are layered on top of each other in the software, which allows you to view all of the lights, darks, and colors at once. This enhances the details of many things, such as the textured wall in one of my photos above. In a normal picture, you wouldn't see the texture as well. But the underexposure brings that detail out by highlighting the shadows. Same with everything else. The software allows you to enhance or decrease the amount of lights/darks to get some pretty strange looks. Some of them come out looking a bit like oil paintings.

Either way, I had mixed feelings about it before I researched it. It really brings out details in things you would otherwise never see because of such things as washed out objects (too much sunlight, etc...), or because of too much darkness.

Photographers in the business just are not into HDR for the over processing. It came about to be capable of drawing the details out of blown out and under exposed shadowy areas and from there evolved to the highly over edited pics most of us see today.

I'm a fan of the landscape aspect, skies in general can really come to life. Too easy for the editor to push way past the limits in everything else so most of the photos end up so far from birth they should have been painted by hand not part of the photography origin.

hdr pictures look awesome, but i hate the idea of editing a picture. it makes me feel like its not a picture anymore, it's more artificial instead of a captured moment.
