I know nothing about photgraphy, but is it supposed to seem in focus at first glance then seem to get soft around the edges after a second or two?

Good pics nonetheless.

Macro shots have no standard, but the majority you find will look much like Reds do above. One hot focal point (his is at camera right flower dead center of the pedals) and everything that is not the exact same distance from the lens as that point is soft or oof as you said.

It's done deliberate to pull attention to the one thing the photographer wanted you to look at.

Also, macro's main intent is to net a life size shot (near 1 to 1 ration) of items that are very small and normally not seen from that perspective. A good example are shots everyone has seen of a flies eye. Those are macro extreme.
