Camera Setting Recommendations for this Weekend
So The wife is gonna be set up by the road where about 40 yellow mustangs are gonna cruise by...I want to get some good shots.. wondering what settings are recommended...
She knows a little bit about her camera stuff..and will mess with the settings to make sure it's good before .. but would like a good starting point.. it will be about 8:30 in the morning, chance of T-storms (now that I look ) high 80s.. so it may or may not be cloudy.. I don't think we'll be moving too fast.. (40ish) and I want big pictures fitting in as many cars as possible..

If she is slightly familiar, but doesn't already have a good idea as to what aperture, iso and shutter speed to set the camera at in certain conditions, I would just recommend to set the camera on auto.
It would be a pain in the butt to bump the aperture and shutter speed up and down experimenting what works if she doesn't already have an idea.

I have found just adjusting the shutter and 'f' makes a good bit of difference.. I'm thinking the ISO would be good on 400-600 I can set the WB based on the setting 'cloudy, sunlight, etc..'.. Not sure what shutter speed to use.. typically when messing with that the pics come out fine, until you view them full size, then you see the blur..

Yelo, are you shooting for rolling wheel blur? How far away in feet will you be shooting from where the cars pass.
I wide angle would work if your moderately close, but from a distance you will likely need 70mm or so to get a good grouping of cars. |

If you wife really doesn't know how to work the camera, then she needs to stay out of "manual Mode" because the weather/lighting is constantly changing throughout the day. Auto might be her best bet really.. Flash shouldn't trigger so you should be fine, and you'll just need to add a little more color in the photos on your computer when you get home maybe.

It's really hard to say without being there. Before any photoshoot I do a series of test shots for given weather conditions. If she has a Tripod it would make things easier. Being cloudy and shooting a rolling vehicle..probably going to want the ISO around 400-600 and exposure could be good right at 0.0-0.7 if she over exposures the photos they can always be cleaned up in photoshop, but it's easier to correct a over exposed photo than an under exposed photo IMO.

no you will not want the ISO bumped up. You want it as low as possible if you want the blur shot. Even on a cloudy day I can't see you would need the ISO bumped up for more light. there should be plenty. your shutter will be around 1/80th to maybe 1/125th if you are doing rolling blur shots. otherwise if you want to stop everything in motion just crank your shutter way up.
