Maaco Job on Buddy's LT1 Camaro... Pleasantly Surprised!

Here's what we started with:

$700 Maaco job later:

I will admit it is definitely no "show car" paint job, but for that kinda price I can't believe the quality they turned out. This is the "presidential" level paint (2nd cheapest) from the Garden City, MI Maaco.

Some people hate on Maaco, but for a budget shop they do some pretty good work, as long as you call ask around and get a good shop.

Maaco is FTL. But if that is all one can maybe afford. You can tell the paint definitely isn't a smooth finish. You can see alot of orange peel.

Macco is hit or miss. I have a buddy who did all the body work on his 89 GT and had Macco spray it. It looks killer, and still does to this day 6 years later.

oh by all means the paint isnt the best. but ive been quoted anywhere from $500-$1100 *just to fix a dented fender* from stealerships to a few normal family paint shops. he made out well. hell, even my factory paint is peeling off on my car. and its been garaged since brand new. if he wanted to wet sand that paint out and make it glossy im sure he could. but hes just not that anal about his car. time will tell how long it lasts, but im sure itll be fine for a while.

the car itself is a 94 LT1/6 spd. barely 70k miles on the clock when purchased. $1500 took it home with the messed up body panels (it had been in a front end collision) and a backfiring issue. new spark plug wires took care of the backfire, and maaco took care of the paint. makes me hate myself for investing over triple that into my 96 gt.

I noticed the orange peel as well. I belive that is the effect of using an air source not strong enough, therefore theres not enough force behind the spray to make it lay flat?

Be sure he keeps it waxed... thats all I can say. However you need to wait atleast a month before waxing it.

Even sanding out the clearcoat will NOT get rid of the orange peel. The orange peel is in the paint (not clearcoat) and you would have to sand the paint smooth to get rid of it.

But for $700, it's a pretty dang good 20' car. If you're trying to make a multi-colored car look decent, it's worth it. I would say it was $700 well spent.

the level paint job he used doesnt even use a clearcoat. its "integrated" in with the base coat. im pretty sure there wasnt even a decent primer coat lol. but yeah i agree, not a bad job. ive read too many maaco horror stories from all around, but this is the 2nd or 3rd maaco job ive seen in person that was actually not bad. id never try and pass off the job as a quality finish, but it sure as hell would fool any normal passserby.

here's one more:

Yeah it's a one stage paint. They scuff up the old paint, lay a sealer/primer down then hit it with the one stage paint/clear. I'm not sure what's up with the maaco in my city. I needed a few cars painted in my time and i've gotten quotes for their cheapest one stage with the lowest being $1800, then $1100 if I did ALL the prep work including removing anything that needs to be removed.
