its just if you show your tags, and you post everything thats in your car...people would be more likly to break in if they had the tag number.

It's easier for an out of town/out of region person to track down your location if it's shown. Everyone on the road sees your tag every day anyway. Removing it for the web doesn't slow down the inevitable. If they want it, they will get it, local or not.
