Reality check

Well, BLutooth and I headed down to the city to catch the air and water show. I've been before so I had a high expectation and a requirement to be at the focal point of the show. That happens to be North Ave Beach. I was looking for 4 or 5 very specific shots but got a reality check once we got to our spot. The reality was, I need more gear. A 400mm focal length was mandatory. Our 70-200mm's were farts in the wind.

We made due, I got a couple great keepers, but didn't get any of my 5 must have shots due to lack of focal range.

This first shot is exactly what I mean by needing 400mm - shot could be sick with an extra 100-200mm of length and a little more skill at keeping up with these fuggers, my panning was a bit slow for these flyby's:

What were some of the shots you were really hoping to get? Great pics as always though man.

sick man. I remember bringing my 200mm to an air show to find out it was not enough length as well.

Harrier and Stealth Bomber were no shows. Both were massive highlights to previous year shows. Not sure what happened or why, but those are on my bucket list of things to photograph.

Within those two, I have specific shots I want -the Harrier's flight abilities allow for some stellar shots, not only of the craft, but the pilot himself while hovering.

The stealth bomber, has detail on the top side that I want to photograph while banking. I don't want the shot while it's sitting on the ground, I want it in the air, with a touch of vapor streaming off the wings.

A prime 400 would break anyones budget. The 100-400mm Is is doable as I had one, but sold it.

Probably a re-purchase coming in my future. I can't handle the rental thing, it's good for seeing if it's something you want to buy. I already know I want it, cause I had it. Tasting it via a rental is of no interest.

Oh ok...I thought maybe to just get those shots u wanted without putting up the coin.

Really like that first shot by the way...did Steve get any worth wild shots?

same issue on his end, only even less focal range as I had my 1.4 extender with me. He'll probably get a few up later this week.

Reality Check it right.... I downloaded all my shots (about 320), and only like about 10. There are several duplicates, triplicates, quads and ect.... In hopes of landing that awsome shot... Anyway, I didn't get much of chance to get my pictures ready for posting today, but I will tonight.

Regardless, the disappointment I had when my pictures finally downloaded, I was not to happy with the "specs (planes)" that I caught in the air. I'm currently using the 40d which is a 10 megapixel shot. I can't really crop, without losing the quality of the image. If I had a 100-400, I think I would have been much..... I mean, if we had the 100-400, we would have been much better off with the images that we wanted.

We both also used a Polorizer on our lenses, since we wanted that deep, deep blue sky background. That also hurt us a bit. If I could only do it again (Next year! Damn!), I know what I need for it! (Canon 5d Mark II - with a minimum of a 400mm lense, throw in a 1.4 extender too!, then crop, crop, crop,crop! LOL)

Anyway, good times pal.... I'll post a few of my favs later this evening....

PS - Photobucket sucks! You really loose the quality of the image..... Booooo!!!!

I used photobucket, since I haven't used flickr in a while, I forgot my passwords and stuff, so I didn't want to even bother. So I went the quick route.
