Need Help with Editing

I have a D40 and well i shoot in auto because i really just use it for family events or whatnot but i am in the car business and use the camera sometimes for pictures. I've noticed that a lot of dealers use CS4 which i have to make there pics look very crisp and some use a basic point and shoot.

Example:

Ambassador Auto Sales Inc.: Obsolete Browser View!

Is there a simple way of editing that can help me achieve this?

Thanks in advance

That entire gallery is pretty much just the raw pictures with a slight sharpness tweak. Too bad the site is crunch the photos as they do look like they would be very good.

You don't need cs4 to do the subtle tweaks like that. Freeware like gimp or an older obselete version of photoshop is more than suffice.

The BMW shots appear to just have an unsharp mask applied around 50%. If I saw the original file sized shot I could get a better guess at the tweaks.

Looking at it closer, that appears to be a wide angle lens as well, which has a large impact visually in automotive photography.

The easiest thing for you might be to shoot RAW. Then process the pictures with DPP (Digital Photo Professional) which should have come with your camera. DPP is very easy to use and can make your raw (or even jpg) pictures look quite a bit better than just accepting whatever jpgs come out of the camera.

Raw is absolutely the best way to shoot, because you can recover shots that are missed by a 2 stops. That absolutely cannot be done in Jpeg. All the details would be lost.

On the flip side, you can get away with jpeg editing ata much more advanced level these days. Especially in cameras like the 5d mark2 and 7d. I'm pulling 23 to 25meg files which allows a cushion for some error and recovery, nothing close to raw though. Raws are coming in at 55meg on the high end.
